Overall Function

We are hiring a Policy Analyst, EU Methane to support and coordinate our advocacy efforts on methane policy in Europe and help advance ambitious EU action on methane emissions. We are looking for candidate with a strong interest in the EU climate and energy policy and motivated to contribute to impact-driven solutions that address methane as a critical part of the broader climate challenge.

Environmental Defense Fund is at the forefront of acting on one of the climate issues that can still be solved in our lifespan - reducing energy methane emissions. Methane from human activities accounts for roughly a quarter of today’s warming and cutting methane in the oil and gas sector offers one of the fastest, cheapest, and most effective ways to slow global warming. The EU is particularly instrumental in this effort, thanks to its EU Methane Regulation, the first binding legislation with the potential to make a real dent in this planetary issue. In the EU, EDF Europe works with partners to put forward pragmatic, science-based solutions that will meet Europe’s energy needs while reducing methane emissions.

This role will report to the Senior Manager, EU Energy Transition based in Brussels, and will liaise closely with colleagues in Europe, the United States and in other overseas offices.

As a Policy Analyst, EU Methane you will help develop, carry out and coordinate advocacy and outreach activities to achieve strong policy outcomes. You will monitor and analyze EU methane policy developments and look for opportunities where our expertise can add value to the debate and policy considerations in Europe, keeping internal colleagues up to date with the information they need to develop their engagement. Your analysis will contribute to EDF Europe being consistently included in discussions with European policy makers, NGOs, academics and industry.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to shaping policy positions and delivering advocacy and outreach activities on EU methane, with a focus on the European institutions and key stakeholders.

  • Support the development and implementation of advocacy strategies, in close collaboration with the Senior Manager, EU Energy Transition.

  • Monitor EU legislative and regulatory developments related to methane emissions and provide timely analysis and updates to the team.

  • Draft high-quality memos, policy briefings, presentations and policy analysis on short timelines.

  • Liaise and coordinate with partner organizations to broaden EDF Europe’s experience and influence on Methane.

  • Work closely with the multidisciplinary Methane teams in Europe and the US to contribute to internal global coordination, sharing major policy developments as required.

  • Seek opportunities for EDF engagement on methane in Europe.

  • Maintain and expand a contact database of key stakeholders, including policymakers, NGOs, industry representatives and media contacts.

  • Keep abreast of EDF Europe’s strategic goals and programmatic work.

  • Participate in advancing EDF’s organizational effectiveness and culture goals, in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges aligned with EDF values.

  • Collaborate with communications teams to align policy advocacy with broader organizational goals and messaging.

Skills & Experience

  • Educated to Bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental policy, European studies, economics or a related field or equivalent professional experience.

  • 3 years of relevant experience, ideally in a European institution or in an NGO or a think-tank. Previous experience as an MEP assistant or Blue book trainee is a plus.

  • Very good understanding of the EU institutions and legislative processes, particularly how the European Parliament and European Commission operate.

  • Strong interest in climate, energy, or environmental issues - prior experience with methane, air pollution, or fossil fuel regulation is a plus.

  • Confidence in handling data and economic reasoning is a plus.

  • Good organizational skills and strong proactivity, with the ability to track policy developments and support time-sensitive advocacy efforts.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with policy makers and external partners.

  • Demonstrated analytical skills in undertaking policy research, producing high quality briefing and ability to synthesize and present succinctly complex information.

  • Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and the ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to adapt to different audiences; fluency in another EU language is an asset.

The role is a 2-year fixed-term contract based in Brussels, Belgium. We support hybrid flexible working. Candidates must be based in Brussels and have the right to live and work in Belgium/EU when applying.
