Knowledge of the Dutch and French language is a prerequisite for this job
As QHSSE Advisor, you have a key role in monitoring quality, health, safety, security and environment (QHSSE) on our civil construction sites. Defense headquarters in Evere, the Prison in Antwerp, Oosterweel connection, Energy Island, VRT in Brussels, all Jan De Nul Group.
As QHSSE Advisor, you will be part of our prestigious projects in Mons, Charleroi, where you will participate in a permanent project team.
In the morning, you start the day with a tour of the site. You put on your personal protective equipment and have a chat with the site manager, before heading out to the site together: How is the project going? What's planned for the next few weeks and months? Have there been any difficulties or problems? Are there things you need to know or can help resolve?
During your tour, you observe the work with the site team and check that safety agreements are being followed. You have a conversation with the people working there and you are interested in what they are doing. Is there a problem with the safety of the works? Then you address it diplomatically.
As a prevention advisor:
- You are responsible for quality, health, safety, security and environmental issues in the pre-qualification, tender and start-up phases on civil construction sites.
- You advise site supervisors, foremen and workers on our construction sites about safety on their project and encourage them to guarantee this safety as much as possible.
- You write out instructions on the safe and correct use of new equipment and machines.
- You participate in safety training on and around our project sites.
- As a partner of the site and project management, you are the link between the site and the office services of Jan De Nul. Your helicopter view and large (internal) network help to ensure that the work on site runs smoothly and safely.
A brief summary of some of your duties:
- You monitor the safety and smoothness of the works for the projects under your responsibility, in different phases of execution.To do so, you consult with site and project management and engage with foremen, workers and subcontractors.
- You evaluate the QHSSE risks of your projects and assist the project manager to achieve the SMART objectives.
- You prepare project-specific documents (QHSSE implementation plan, emergency plan, inspection and testing plan) and support the project team during the implementation phase.
- You observe and analyze safety issues that occur on a job site and log them correctly through our platform. You also follow up on these incidents.
- You investigate accidents that occur on site. You also follow up on what safety modifications have been made to avoid similar accidents in the future.
- You facilitate and perform QHSSE audits and inspections,

What do you need?
- You have a bachelor's or master's degree in environmental management, safety management, construction, mechanical engineering or a related field. If you have experience as an environmental coordinator, safety coordinator or prevention consultant, that's a plus.
- You have a minimum of 8 years of experience as a prevention consultant.
- You have a good knowledge of English and also speak a bit of French and Dutch.
- You have communication and social skills. You can and dare talk to anyone, in an appropriate way. You can coach and guide.
- You enjoy working in a team, but are also strong at working independently.
- You can prioritize and plan effectively to meet deadlines.
- You like variety. No two days are the same as a QHSSE Advisor. Your schedule can change completely at short notice and you often don't know how and where your day starts or ends.
- You have a strong character. Do you see an unsafe situation? Then you dare to say so and investigate the matter thoroughly. You don't let yourself be put off and you dare to continue in an appropriate manner if there is some resistance.
- You are flexible and adapt to changing circumstances on the sites.
- You like to work and think along with the site management, while keeping a practical and critical eye.
