About the Break Free From Plastic movement
(BFFP) is a global movement envisioning a future free from plastic pollution. Since its launch in September 2016, over 3500 organisations from 186 countries have joined the movement to demand massive reductions in single-use plastics and to push for lasting solutions to the plastic pollution crisis. In Europe, the movement counts 128 member organisations in 33 countries, coordinating their work to achieve systemic change. Ten of those organisations form the , the EU policy arm of the Break Free From Plastic movement. Zero Waste Europe (ZWE) hosts the coordination team of the European chapter of the movement.
About you
You are passionate about addressing plastic pollution and its root causes, and have experience in networks or movements. You are enjoying solving problems as well as empowering collective work at the service of systemic change. You understand the power of storytelling to shift narratives and inspire action, and are skilled at amplifying voices through strategic use of network channels, digital media and communications.
You are highly organised, process oriented and very good at anticipating challenges while jumping on opportunities. You have a particular appetite for relationships and synergy building, and are capable of running different tasks simultaneously.
You excel at personal relations and working in an agile international environment with colleagues and members across Europe and the globe.
About the Role
As the Movement Associate for the BFFP Europe movement you would be responsible for:
Manage BFFP Europe membership tools and requests
- Manage tools for the membership: members’ calendar, access to mailing lists and documents for incoming and outgoing members, yearly update of contacts
- Lead processes around applicants and new members: conduct interviews with member applicants, execute background checks, collect relevant feedback and organise onboarding for new members
- Act as first point of contact for BFFP Europe core members: manage requests as relevant and dispatch to relevant team members when necessary
- Manage polls, invitations and email reminders for BFFP Europe movement online meetings.
Support the implementation of the movement building strategy for BFFP Europe
- Be part of the global Movement Support Group, update other regions’ counterparts on movement building developments in Europe and share back relevant information, peer learn, contribute to global processes as relevant
- Support the European coordinator with the implementation of various pieces of the movement building strategy, including around resilience work
Support the BFFP Europe Communications officer and the implementation of the BFFP Europe comms strategy
- Monitor members’ work (reports, resources, campaigns) for amplification on BFFP website & social media
- Draft and create social media content on a regular basis, especially with regards to amplification of members’ work
- Support website management ( website)
Support on events
- Research and book venues, accommodation, catering, restaurants and equipment as needed
- Contribute to the drafting of invitations, registration forms, logistics packs, attendance registers and other key documents
- Assist with onsite events management
Contribute to the BFFP Europe coordination team
- Attend team meetings, including weekly team check-ins and quarterly global team calls
- Contribute to the organising of the monthly calls with the BFFP Europe movement, and in person team meetings
Person Specification
Experience
- Experience working in a movement or network setting
- Experience in supporting communications, campaigns and/or projects
- Experience in working with people from different cultures and nationalities in a way that facilitates an intersectional approach
- Experience working with membership and movement building
- Experience running communications campaigns on social media
- Experience in organising events
Knowledge, skills and understanding
- Passion for social and environmental justice
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to details
- Excellent command of English, and the ability to communicate complicated messages clearly and appropriately to different audiences
- Strong networking and team building skills appropriate for a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment
- Solid IT competences with collaborative tools (Google Drive, Slack, Asana, Zoom, Google Groups)
- Interest in issues associated with plastics
- Command of main social media platforms
- Ability to manage and, as relevant, mediate differences of opinion or disagreements
- Other languages, apart from English, are a plus

Location, Compensation and Work Environment
This is a full-time position with a preference for the successful candidate to be based in Brussels, under a Belgian contract. We will also consider applicants based in Berlin, and those wishing to work part-time.
A valid working permit to work in Belgium/Germany is required. We offer a 6 month contract until 31 March 2026, with the intention to make it a permanent position afterwards, pending funding.
We offer a competitive salary in the range of € 3029-3227/month for full time, which is fully calculated according to your transferable years of experience, the requirements of the current job offer, and in alignment with the salary policy of our fiscal sponsor in Belgium.
In addition to this, for those based in Belgium, we offer benefits such as lunch vouchers; a 13th month salary payment proportional to your time worked during the year and holiday pay, or an equivalent if the successful candidate is based in Germany.
Team members also benefit from 26 vacation days (pro rata) plus additional leave between Christmas and New Year, progressive discretionary leave policies, travel insurance and a 4-day working week (may differ for part-time).

We expect the first round of interviews to take place on 25 and 27 August online, after which there will be a written assignment for the candidates selected for the second round of interviews.
