Duties
- Cleans and disinfects animal feeding utensils and pen areas. Maintains stock of cleaning materials and other items used.
- Feeds animals taking care to measure food portions according to feeding instructions.
- Receives and shelters animals brought to the veterinarian clinic for treatment, temporary care or disposal.
- Observes animals and notifies supervisor of abnormal appearance.
- Keeps records on animals in the facility. Assists other workers to restrain and treat animals.

- A one-year probationary period may be required.
- Possesses satisfactory completion of pre-employment background checks in accordance with AR 215-3, 2-13, to include a Tier 1 background investigation.
- This position may require a health screening. Immunizations may be required as a condition of employment for the health and safety of those in the facility.
- The tour of duty requires rotating shiftwork, to include weekends and holidays.
- Works inside in often poorly lighted or insulated areas, and outside exposed to extreme weather conditions. Inside work often exposes animal caretakers to unpleasant odors and noises.
- Duties involve considerable physical effort including lifting various items such as animals, feed, or supplies, occasionally weighing up to 70 pounds, bending, climbing, and working in tiring and awkward positions.
Qualifications
1. Be physically able to lift and carry heavy items weighing over 70 pounds.
2. Stand and walk for long periods of time.
3. Be able to follow complex written instructions.
4. Be able to maintain animal care records.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Duties involve considerable physical effort, including lifting various items such as animals, feed, or supplies occasionally weighing up to 70 pounds. Duties also involve bending, climbing, and working in tiring and awkward positions. May need to use greater strength or agility to capture and restrain stronger or more active animals.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to unpleasant odors and noises, animal bites, scratches and contagious diseases. May be required to wear protective equipment.
