About the MarSens Research Group
At the Marine Optics and Remote Sensing group (MarSens) – part of the Faculty of Sciences (Biology, Campus De Sterre) – we develop and apply in situ and remote sensing observations to study marine particles (such as plankton, ‘marine snow’, and (bio)minerals), which play a key role in ocean ecosystems and the carbon cycle. YOUR TASKS
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will contribute to both ongoing and new research projects in the field of marine optics and remote sensing. Your responsibilities include:
- Main Tasks
- Archiving, processing, and analyzing Earth observation satellite imagery of coastal and oceanic waters.
- Developing and applying remote sensing algorithms for ecological and biogeochemical parameters.
- Processing in situ data (optical and biogeochemical measurements).
- Participating in field campaigns at sea (approximately 20 days/year).
- Optional Additional Tasks
- Laboratory work (e.g., optical measurements)
- Supervision of MSc and PhD students
- Support in applying for research funding
- Occasional teaching assignments
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a PhD in remote sensing, marine bio-optics, marine sciences, or oceanography.
- You have experience with:
- Processing satellite data (including atmospheric correction of ocean colour imagery)
- Developing and applying remote sensing algorithms
- Fieldwork at sea and handling optical field data
- You are proficient in programming languages such as Python and/or R
- You have a foundational understanding of marine biogeochemistry and ecology
Assets
- Experience with optical and biogeochemical lab work
- Successfully acquired research funding
- An international and interdisciplinary career path
- A valid driver’s license
- Fluency in English (knowledge of Dutch is a plus)
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- A full-time contract for 12 months, renewable upon positive evaluation
- Start date: planned for November/December 2025
