The Role: Communications Expert – Media & External Relations

The VIB Communications team drives the communications strategy and ensures the global visibility of the institute's successes and activities. We are looking for an experienced Communications Expert to elevate our visibility, enhance media engagement, and manage our external communications. This is a role at the intersection of science, society, and strategy – ideal for a communications professional with a sharp news sense, crisis acumen, and a passion for science-driven storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

Media & External Relations

• Develop and implement a strategic media relations plan to promote VIB’s research, impact, and thought leadership.
• Act as the primary point of contact for press inquiries and media outreach.
• Proactively develop relationships with journalists in life sciences, healthcare, and business sectors.
• Pitch stories highlighting VIB’s research and breakthroughs to the media.
• Monitor media coverage, measure impact, and adapt strategies accordingly.
• Organize press briefings, visits and other events, representing VIB and liaising with stakeholders, including academics, policymakers, foreign delegations, and funders.

Content Management

• Develop compelling content for the website, social media, marketing materials, blog, and newsletters for internal and external audiences.
• Assist in the development and execution of crisis communication plans; develop clear messaging during sensitive or high-impact situations.
• Manage communications projects and campaigns.
• Manage social media channels with a focus on broadening global reach.
• Collaborate with colleagues across VIB, in scientific centers, investor relations, and other units to ensure alignment and consistency.

About you

• Communications professional with at least 3 years of experience in external/public relations, journalism, or institutional communication.
• Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Life Sciences, or a related field.
• Background in science communication or work experience in the research, innovation, health, or biotech sectors is highly valued.
• Experience in the development and marketing of scientific content.
• Experience managing projects and campaigns, delivering quality results.
• Excellent public speaking skills, delivering compelling presentations for diverse audiences.
• Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills in English and Dutch.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail under tight deadlines.
• Comfortable liaising with journalists, scientists, executives, and stakeholders at all levels.
