Job Description:
Mars has made significant progress initiating projects to decarbonize its supply chain across agriculture, transportation, packaging, and operations, and is rapidly scaling up programs and governance to support these projects. Beyond this, a variety of services, indirect purchases, and atypical or recently acquired business units make up more than 7% of Mars’ Scope 3 footprint, including digital technology, marketing services, veterinary services, investments and travel. Mars is committed to Net Zero by 2050 and a 50% reduction in full value chain emissions by 2030. Mars needs to expand capabilities across raws, packaging, transport and operations while also building new capabilities to reduce emissions in services, indirects, and acquisitions.
This role will focus on leading the development of accounting and mitigation strategies for spend-based accounting and will be Mars subject matter expert on this topic, something that does not exist in our business today. Internally, the associate will engage leadership of relevant functions and business units (including the Sustainability VP’s and CMO’s for each Mars segment), lead working groups, design strategies, recommend process and system changes, develop policies, identify mitigation opportunities, and support business unit action to reduce emissions. In addition to emissions reductions, there are financial savings that this role could identify and help deliver. This role will be at the cutting edge of climate innovation in these categories and will need to operate with significant creativity and ambiguity. This associate will represent Mars in external forums for climate issues on these topics including with suppliers, peers, and NGOs.
